  11. BALTIMORE (AP) -- A computer hacker pleaded guilty Friday to stealing
  12. information from American Telephone & Telegraph and its subsidiary
  13. Bell Laboratories.
  14.  
  15. Under an agreement with prosecutors, Leonard Rose pleaded guilty in
  16. U.S. District Court to one count of sending AT&T source codes via
  17. computer to Richard Andrews, an Illinois hacker, and a similar wire
  18. fraud charge involving a Chicago hacker.
  19.  
  20. Prosecutors said they will ask that Rose be sentenced to two
  21. concurrent one-year terms. Rose is expected to be sentenced in May.

  23. Neither Rose nor his attorney could be immediately reached for comment
  24. late Friday.

  26. "Other computer hackers who choose to use their talents to interfere
  27. with the security and privacy of computer systems can expect to be
  28. prosecuted and to face similar penalties," said U.S. Attorney
  29. Breckinridge L. Willcox.

  31. "The sentence contemplated in the plea agreement reflects the serious
  32. nature of this new form of theft," Willcox said.

  34. Rose, 32, was charged in May 1990 in a five-count indictment following
  35. an investigation by the Secret Service and the U.S. Attorney's offices
  36. in Baltimore and Chicago.

  38. He also had been charged with distributing "trojan horse" programs,
  39. designed to gain unauthorized access to computer systems, to other
  40. hackers.

  42. Prosecutors said Rose and other hackers entered into a scheme to steal
  43. computer source codes from AT&T's UNIX computer system.

  45. The plea agreement stipulates that after he serves his sentence, Rose
  46. must disclose his past conduct to potential employers that have
  47. computers with similar source codes.
